Capitol Hill, often called "Cap Hill" by locals, is one of Denver’s oldest, densest, and most eclectic neighborhoods. Located just southeast of the Central Business District, it serves as the city's civic and cultural heart, blending grand Victorian history with a gritty, bohemian energy.
Civic and Historic Significance
The neighborhood is defined by its namesake, the Colorado State Capitol, which sits on the neighborhood's western edge. The Capitol’s dome is gilded in 24-karat gold leaf, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush. Its 13th, 15th, and 18th steps are all marked as being exactly one mile above sea level. In the late 19th century, Capitol Hill was the playground of Denver's elite. Grant Street was once lined with massive estates built by silver barons and mining magnates. One of the neighborhood’s most famous landmarks is the Molly Brown House Museum, the former home of the Titanic survivor and social activist.
Culture and Lifestyle
Cap Hill has long been Denver’s bohemian center, famously hosting Beat Generation icons like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg at the Colburn Hotel. The neighborhood is home to legendary venues like The Fillmore Auditorium and The Ogden Theatre on Colfax Avenue. Colfax Avenue, the neighborhood's northern border, is the longest continuous commercial street in the U.S. and is lined with punk-rock bars, late-night diners, and independent bookstores. It is arguably Denver’s most walkable neighborhood, with residents enjoying easy access to Cheesman Park and Civic Center Park.
