Cheesman Park is one of Denver’s most cherished urban green spaces. It features sprawling lawns, beautiful neoclassical architecture, and a history that is both haunting and intriguing. Located just east of Capitol Hill, it acts as a peaceful "backyard" for the city’s busiest residential area.
History and "The Secret Below"
The park’s history is part of local lore. Before it became a park, the land was home to Prospect Hill Cemetery, which was established in 1858. In the late 1890s, the city chose to turn the graveyard into a park. A local undertaker was hired to relocate the bodies, but due to widespread fraud and poor management, many were left behind. Estimates suggest that thousands of remains might still be under the grass today. This history has made Cheesman Park widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in Colorado. It even inspired the classic horror film The Changeling.
Architecture and Landmarks
The park features a wide-open, uncluttered design that offers panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. A striking white marble structure built in 1909 stands in the park. It has neoclassical columns and serves as a popular spot for weddings, yoga classes, and watching sunsets. To the east, world-class gardens once part of the original cemetery grounds now cover 24 acres of diverse plant life. The park is surrounded by some of Denver's most prestigious real estate, including historic mansions and the stylish high-rise apartments on Humboldt Street.
Cheesman Park serves as the social hub of central Denver. It has a relaxed, inclusive, and active atmosphere.
